Week of Jun 03 – Jun 07, 2013
- Construction started for the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit in Toronto. The $4.9B project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
- Developer Tridel Condominiums and real estate firm Hines Interests Limited Partnership released details of their $1.1B Aqualina development project at Bayside Toronto. It will include residential, commercial and cultural uses.
- CVTech Group Incorporated announced that its Ontario-based subsidiary Riggs Distler Incorporated has obtained five contracts totalling $24.5M, including three projects in Toronto. The work is expected to take place between 2013-2015.
- The groundbreaking ceremony for the new downtown Oshawa Holiday Inn Express and Oshawa Convention Centre took place on June 6, 2013. The $21M development is expected to be completed by December 2014.
- The Toronto International Film Festival Recruitment Fair will take place on June 20, 23 and 28, 2013, at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Reitman Square, Toronto
Week of May 27 – May 31, 2013
- PCL Constructors Canada Incorporated has signed an $84.2M contract for Humber College's new Learning Resource Commons project. Approximately 150 workers are expected to be involved in the construction.
- The University of Toronto Mississauga has broken ground on a $35M complex for the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs. It is being built by PCL Constructors Canada Incorporated and is scheduled to open in September 2014.
- A ground breaking ceremony was held for the new $15M Town of Oakville North Operations Depot and interim fire station. Construction completion and hiring of 16-20 firefighters is expected to take place in spring/summer 2014.
- A new Walmart Supercentre opened in Malton on May 31, 2013, employing 170 associates
- Rogers Communications closed its CityNews Channel in Toronto and is cutting production in its OMNI Television operations. The changes will impact 2.5% of the company’s broadcast workforce and an estimated 62 full-time jobs will be lost.
- Multimedia Nova Corporation, the parent company of the Town Crier, Toronto Today, and Vaughan Today newspapers, has suspended publication indefinitely. All the staff have been given layoff notices.
Week of May 20 – May 24, 2013
- The official opening of 84 affordable housing rental units for low-income seniors took place in Vaughan. The project cost more than $5.8M and created up to 210 jobs in York Region.
- Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited started construction on a new downtown transformer station. The project is expected to cost $195M and should be completed by the end of 2014.
- The Summer 2013 Job Fair and Training Expo will take place on June 19, 2013, at the Pearson Convention Centre in Brampton
- The Career, Education and Settlement Fair will take place on June 25, 2013, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre
- Several retailers planning to open at the Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills have posted online hiring advertisements. The mall is set to open on August 1, 2013, with 85 stores.
Week of May 13 – May 17, 2013
- Birchmount Woods, a 152-unit affordable housing rental project, was officially opened in Scarborough. Its construction created about 380 jobs.
- The Target Canada regional distribution centre in Milton has been completed by Cooper Construction Ltd. It will be the supply chain and logistics support hub for Target’s retail network.
- The Canadian Film Centre’s Northern Dancer Pavilion ground-breaking took place on May 15, 2013, in Toronto. Renovations worth $9M are planned as part of the Windfields Campus Improvement Project.
- The construction of a new GO Transit bus storage and maintenance facility in East Gwillimbury was announced. The total project cost is estimated at $20.5M.
- A GoodLife Fitness Club will open at Toronto Pearson International Airport’s Terminal 1 in September 2013
- The Toronto Premium Outlet Mall job fair will take place on June 6, 2013, at the Milton Sports Centre, in Milton
- The York Humber Employment and Social Services information fair on employment services will take place on June 7, 2013, in Toronto
- The Toronto Engineering and Technical Career Expo will take place on June 13, 2013, at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Conference Centre
