Electrical and electronics engineers design, plan, research, evaluate and test electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They are employed by electrical utilities, communications companies, manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, consulting firms, and by a wide range of manufacturing, processing and transportation industries and government.

Electrical and electronics engineers perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of electrical generation and distribution networks, electrical machinery and components and electronic communications, instrumentation and control systems, equipment, and components
  • Prepare material cost and timing estimates, reports and design specifications for electrical and electronic systems and equipment
  • Design electrical and electronic circuits, components, systems and equipment
  • Supervise and inspect the installation, modification, testing and operation of electrical and electronic systems and equipment
  • Develop maintenance and operating standards for electrical and electronic systems and equipment
  • Investigate electrical or electronic failures
  • Prepare contract documents and evaluate tenders for construction or maintenance
  • Supervise technicians, technologists, programmers, analysts and other engineers.

Electrical and electronics engineers may specialize in a number of areas including electrical design for residential, commercial or industrial installations, electrical power generation and transmission, and instrumentation and control systems.

IEGs can start the licensure process before or after landing in Canada:

Submit an Application for Licence to the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).

  • Time: IEG applicants will be contacted within 6-8 weeks after PEO receives their completed Application package.
  • Application Fee: CAN$300 + tax = CAN$315.00

Within six months from landing in Canada, IEGs can:
Apply for a P.Eng. licence through the Financial Credit Program, if qualified, the initial application fees will be waived through this Program. For more information, visit the PEO Web site.

Important documents
Please read the Application for Licence and collect the following documents to support your application for a P.Eng. licence:

  • Original transcripts, diplomas, degrees and/or certificates;
  • A copy of the thesis abstract for any postgraduate degree or degrees;
  • Course descriptions of the subjects taken during their engineering education; and
  • Work experience summary.

Note 1) Copies of the original documents will be accepted if the copies are signed and certified as a true copy of the original by a Canadian professional engineer (with licence number) or a notary public of Ontario.
Note 2) Applicants may also bring their originals and copies to PEO’s office for verification.
Note 3) If original transcripts, diplomas, degrees, certificates and/or abstracts are not issued by the institution in English, English translations must be prepared by a certified translator of the Association Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO), or by a Canadian professional engineer who must certify that he or she is fluent in both languages.

Graduates of Canadian or American universities must submit their academic transcripts showing the date the degree was conferred.
Note: all academic documents issued by Canadian and/or American institutions must be sent to PEO directly by the institution issuing the documents. Photocopied transcripts and/or student-issued transcripts from those institutions are not acceptable.
