Compared to other occupations, this is not a significant occupation in this region.
In Ontario, the outlook for hairstylists and barbers is expected to be fair over the period 2012-2013. At the time of the 2006 census, there were nearly 34,000 hairstylists and barbers in the province, a slight increase from the previous census.
There is a steady demand for skilled hairstylists and barbers, however some salons and barbershops hire only those who are experienced and who bring an established clientele with them. An increasing number of professionals rent chairs in salons while others choose to work out of their own homes. Those who work out of their homes often provide services at a slightly lower cost. Employment prospects are best for those who possess a broad range of experience. This occupation is sensitive to economic downturns. As disposable income declines, individuals often delay going to a hairstylist or barber, or resort to do-it-yourself products. Less than 20% of workers in this occupation were aged 55 and over at the time of the 2006 census. As a result, most employment opportunities will be created by replacement and turnover needs rather than retirements.
