The future forecast and current conditions for an occupation can vary based on location or due to changes in the economy, technology, or demand for a product or service.
Local Employment Potential Information
| Location | Employment Potential | Release Date |
|---|---|---|
| Kingston - Pembroke Region | <Not assigned> | 2011-12-16 |
Compared to other occupations, this is not a significant occupation in this region.
Employment prospects for computer engineers in Ontario are expected to be average for the next few years. According to the 2006 Census, there were over 13,700 computer engineers in the labour force in Ontario. Demand has increased for engineers who have technology-specific experience. However, a high Canadian dollar may limit investment and research and development spending on Information and Communications Technology (ICT), such as hardware, affecting job opportunities for people in this occupation.
Employers are interested in recruiting workers with practical working experience. Particularly, computer engineers with greater than 5 years experience are expected to be in demand. People in this occupation are highly concentrated in large urban areas across Ontario. As such, employers in smaller population centers may encounter difficulty in recruiting workers with significant experience. People in this occupation must be familiar with new technologies and their applications in order to be successful. Job seekers with experience in hardware languages, such as Verilog or VHDL, may have better job prospects. Limited openings will be created through retirements over the next few years as less than 7% of this occupation was 55 years and older at the time of 2006 census.
