Administrative officers oversee and implement administrative procedures, establish work priorities and co-ordinate the acquisition of administrative services such as office space, supplies and security services. They are employed throughout the private and public sectors.

Administrative officers perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Oversee and co-ordinate office administrative procedures and review, evaluate and implement new procedures
  • Establish work priorities, delegate work to office support staff, and ensure deadlines are met and procedures are followed
  • Carry out administrative activities associated with admissions to post-secondary educational institutions
  • Administer policies and procedures related to the release of records in processing requests under government access to information and privacy legislation
  • Co-ordinate and plan for office services, such as accommodation, relocations, equipment, supplies, forms, disposal of assets, parking, maintenance and security services
  • Assist in preparation of operating budget and maintain inventory and budgetary controls
  • Assemble data and prepare periodic and special reports, manuals and correspondence.

In the Northwest economic region, the employment prospects for administrative officers are expected to be average for the period 2012-2013. This is a large occupation in the region with a labour force of about 1,100 at the time of the 2006 census.

In Ontario, the outlook for administrative officers is expected to be average for the period 2012-2013. Demand for administrative officers will stem from the ongoing need for personnel to provide organisational support in offices. However this occupation will continue to be affected by office automation, with most of the clerical duties that were previously performed by other staff now consolidated into the job functions of these workers. Administrative officers will also be assigned more professional and technical responsibilties and expected to provide more direct support to management.

Job prospects will be more favourable for individuals with strong multi-tasking skills, proficiency in computer applications and the ability to learn and use new technologies. Individuals who are fluent in English and French languages and who have knowledge of industry-specific data management software, will have improved employment prospects. Many of the job openings will be for contract positions. At the time of the 2006 census, this was a large occupation in Ontario with a labour force of almost 72,000. Job opportunities are usually available year-round.
