In Ontario, the outlook for administrative officers is expected to be average for the period 2012-2013. Demand for administrative officers will stem from the ongoing need for personnel to provide organisational support in offices. However this occupation will continue to be affected by office automation, with most of the clerical duties that were previously performed by other staff now consolidated into the job functions of these workers. Administrative officers will also be assigned more professional and technical responsibilties and expected to provide more direct support to management.
Job prospects will be more favourable for individuals with strong multi-tasking skills, proficiency in computer applications and the ability to learn and use new technologies. Individuals who are fluent in English and French languages and who have knowledge of industry-specific data management software, will have improved employment prospects. Many of the job openings will be for contract positions. At the time of the 2006 census, this was a large occupation in Ontario with a labour force of almost 72,000. Job opportunities are usually available year-round.
