The employment prospects for security guards in Northeastern Ontario are expected to be average to good over the next few years. The occupation is quite large in this region, having grown moderately (+20%) over the last intercensal period to a labour force of about 1,595 workers. Increasing concerns among the public about vandalism and terrorism is contributing to job opportunities. One area of growth over the last several years has been in airport security services due to continuing federal investment in air travel security. Some of these jobs would have been for pre-boarding security officers.
Given the large size of the occupation group, a fair number of opportunities will be created each year as workers leave, quit or retire. The turnover rate in this occupation is higher than average given the significant share of part-time work and the lower skill requirements. Retirements may not contribute many openings, despite the older age profile of the occupation. One-third of workers were 50 years and older in the Northeast according to the last census data. However, security guard work is often chosen by older workers as a suitable part-time or casual job at the end of their careers.
