In Ontario, the outlook for restaurant and food service managers is expected to be limited to fair over the period 2012-2013. At the time of the 2006 census, there were about 41,500 restaurant and food service managers in Ontario, a decline of almost 17% from the previous census. This occupation is sensitive to economic conditions as the restaurant and food services industry is dependent on consumer spending. Food and beverage establishments such as restaurants and bars are the main source of employment in this occupation. Some opportunities are expected to occur in limited-service restaurants whose focus is on quickly prepared, inexpensive meals. This occupation has a slightly younger age profile when compared to others in the province. The majority of job openings will result from the need to replace workers who leave their jobs due to turnover, although the competition for these openings is expected to be high.
Previous experience in the industry is usually required for managerial positions. There is an increasing demand for applicants with additional post-secondary education, training and/or certification. The use of computerized ordering and inventory control systems is common throughout the industry and therefore computer proficiency is generally required. People with managerial and financial experience will have the best job prospects. A background in staffing and recruitment, training and development, and sales forecasting is desirable.
