In Ontario, the outlook for graphic designers and illustrators is expected to be fair for the period 2012-2013. Graphic designers and illustrators are concentrated in large urban areas throughout Ontario. Given the rise of digital media, the demand for designers with interactive media skills has increased while opportunities in print-based design have been negatively affected.
According to the 2006 census, there were approximately 24,000 graphic designers and illustrators in Ontario, representing an increase of 20% from the previous census. Overall, this is a young workforce compared to other occupations in the province with nearly 85% of graphic designers and illustrators under the age of 50 years old. As such, retirements will contribute to limited job openings over the next few years.
