Week of May 06 – May 10, 2013

• A ground breaking ceremony is being held this week for The Outlet Collection at Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake. About 1,000 jobs will be created during the construction of the outlet mall and over 1,500 jobs will be created upon completion
• Panacis Inc, an Ottawa-based battery developer, will receive up to $613,457 from FedDev Ontario, in addition to private investment of up to $1.2M in order to help commercialize a new battery system, creating up to 15 full-time jobs
• Claridge Homes received approval to build a 45-storey condo building in Ottawa, to be located at Preston and Norfolk Avenues
• Birnam Excavating Ltd. has been contracted for the Carroll Street West construction in Strathroy-Caradoc. The total cost will be approximately $2.5M, with a tentative start date in mid-July.
• Ontario is partnering with 16 additional community agencies and providing support for more youth outreach workers, 20 of whom will be in Toronto, as part of its Youth Outreach Worker Program
• The London Black Fly Beverage Co. is planning to double its production capacity next year and expand into other markets. Six summer staff will be recruited to promote its new products.
• Almost $8M in infrastructure contracts approved for Thunder Bay this summer
• A full service Husky rest stop is planned for Highway 17 near Cobden. The $2.5M construction project will include a gas bar, two restaurants, and a card lock.
• Granite Networks, an Ottawa-based data centre firm, has raised $2M in funding to be used to grow the company's client base and hire more sales staff in the near future
• Construction of a 72-unit hotel in Kirkland Lake scheduled to start in the summer
• Cedarwell Excavating Ltd. to begin a nine-week re-construction of 13th Avenue in Hanover this month
• DaviCor Construction Inc. of Port Sydney was awarded a contract to complete Phase 1 construction at Pitman’s Bay Camp near Huntsville
• Clinton Raceway construction project to be completed by opening day May 19  
• Caterpillar Inc. announced that it will close its Toronto tunnel-boring machine facility by mid-April 2014, which will lead to 330 people being out of work
• Knape & Vogt Manufacturing Co. is closing its furniture facility in Kitchener by the second half of 2014 and moving the operation to Grand Rapids, Michigan, affecting more than 230 workers
• The Scarborough Hospital’s latest proposed cuts will include palliative care beds and a diabetes education centre. It is also proceeding with plans to eliminate 198 positions, including nurses.
• The Toronto District School Board plans on reducing staff and using fewer skilled tradespeople in order to save $5M for the 2013-2014 budget
• The Museum of Civilization in Ottawa laid off 14 staff due to a budget shortfall. The layoffs affected various departments, however no researchers or curators were lost.
• The Renfrew and District Christian School will be closing its doors after the current school year due to poor enrollment. The school is currently in its 27th year of existence.
• The City of Ottawa will be closing the Fisher Heights child care centre as of August 2013. Declining attendance and the proliferation of full day kindergarten programs contributed to the decision.
• The Learning Disabilities Association of Peterborough will offer a six-week Jobfit employment preparation program to unemployed individuals over the age of 18 with learning disabilities
• Ontario has expanded its nursing job placement program to accept 600 nursing graduates trained elsewhere in Canada and abroad, increasing annual spots to 2,800
• The London Artists in Residence Program was launched to support local professional artists. During the pilot year 10 artists were selected, and funding is in place for an expansion in 2013-2014.
• The Nursing and Health Care Job Expo will be held at the Quality Hotel, Oshawa, on May 22, 2013 (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Admission is free.
• The Canada Job Expo will be held at the North York Civic Centre on May 28, 2013
• The Hire Canada Job Fair and Training Expo will be held at the Pearson Convention Centre, Brampton, on June 19, 2013

Week of Apr 29 – May 03, 2013

• PowerBlades Inc., a subsidiary of REpower Systems, is hiring about 200 workers to manufacture wind turbine blades in Welland
• TSP Canada Towers Inc., a Thorold-based wind tower manufacturer, is looking to fill 150 positions with young local workers
• Miller Paving Limited is reconstructing 34 kilometres of Highway 65 near New Liskeard this spring, creating 96 jobs
• Dalcon Enterprises has been awarded a contract to make improvements to infrastructure on Highway 11 near Beardmore, creating about 40 jobs this spring
• Cruickshank Construction Limited will create 29 jobs for improvements to the Amable du Fond River Bridge on Highway 630 near Mattawa
• Roulston’s Pharmacy opened a new Wellness Centre in Simcoe this week, attracting five local doctors with additional space for another three physicians
• A ground breaking ceremony for the $100M South Kent Wind Project, located in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent was held on May 1st
• AON Inc. will build a four-storey, 65-unit seniors apartment building on Cherryhill Road in Peterborough
• A new $8.5M sewage testing plant will be constructed in London
• Harbour House Grill opened in Innisfil
• A Delicate Edge, a new clothing boutique and hair salon, will open in Kincardine on Queen Street in May
• Sundown Theatre to perform in Kincardine this summer, seeking local actors and musicians who must register by May 31 in order to audition
• Lambton Kent school Board issues layoff notices to 32 teachers due to declining enrolment
• The City of Waterloo laid off nine employees as a result of a city-wide organizational review
• The Waterloo Region Small Business Centre is accepting applications until May 17 for youth who are interested in starting their own business this summer
• The Peterborough Council for Persons with Disabilities will open a Centre for Independent Living on Sherbrooke Street in May to provide local information and job mentoring to those with disabilities

Week of Apr 22 – Apr 26, 2013

• FedDev Ontario has invested $1.85M in four Ottawa area software companies. 360pi Corporation, SWIX Inc., Therapeutic Monitoring Systems and Capital Angel Network, are expected to create up to 44 jobs initially, with an additional 67 jobs by 2016.
• Vale opened its new $13M processing facility at its precious metals refinery in Port Colborne
• General Motors is recalling 114 production workers to the Glendale Powertrain plant in St. Catharines in June and 60 workers in the fall
• McMaster Children’s Hospital opened a pediatric ophthalmology centre in Hamilton
• Penn Energy of Pennsylvania started site preparation on its 90-acre solar panel farm near Baltimore, just northeast of Cobourg, creating approximately 100 short-term jobs
• The Wingham and District Hospital will receive provincial government funding for renovations and new construction. Work will start by spring 2014.
• Crate Marine Sales will open a new location at 25 Dundas St. in Belleville. The location will offer a variety of boats for sale, as well as service and dockage. In addition to the new storefront, area dockage is expected to expand significantly.
• A 25,000 sq.-ft. Bed, Bath and Beyond has opened in London
• Construction of $2.2M science labs at Dresden high school to commence late spring
• Construction of a 32,000 sq.-ft. building at new Leamington industrial park has started
• All eight Bruce Power plant nuclear generating units in Tiverton are now again in full operation. Bruce Power is currently seeking supply chain, IT, project management, operations and maintenance staff.
• Groves Memorial Community Hospital in Wellington received $5.5M from the provincial government to continue work on the design of the new hospital
• Chesley District High School will undergo a $2.1M renovation to convert it to a JK-12 school which will be ready in September 2014. Kinghurst Community School will close in June 2014 and its students transferred to Chesley.
• The London District Catholic school board issued 142 potential layoff notices to teachers
• Indigo Books in downtown Kingston will close on June 29 after the company decided not to renew its lease. The store employed over 20 full-time staff and several part-time staff.
• The Canadian Jewish News will stop publishing in June affecting 50 employees in Toronto and Montreal
• Babcock & Wilcox Canada Ltd., a steam generation products manufacturer, laid off 26 workers at its Cambridge location
• Longtime Cobourg manufacturer Signode [Strapex] will close in June, affecting 25 workers. Parent company Illinois Tool Works is consolidating operations in the U.S.
• Foley’s Furnishing in Collingwood will close, affecting nine full-time employees and one part-time employee
• Resolute Forest Products announced a two-week shutdown at their newsprint mill in Thunder Bay, affecting more than 100 workers. The company cites market conditions for the downtime.
• The Stratford Accelerator Centre, which offers support to technology-based business start-ups, officially opens in May

Week of Apr 15 – Apr 19, 2013

• HGS Canada will expand its contact centre operations to Barrie, creating 500 jobs initially with the potential for future growth within the year. The company is currently hiring both entry level and management positions.
• Graham Construction of Mississauga was awarded a design-build contract for the new Canadian Forces Military Police Academy building at Canadian Forces Base Borden. The $54M project expects to create 173 jobs and to be completed in 2015.
• Bonnechere Excavating Limited was awarded an $8.4M contract to repair Highway 535 near Noelville creating approximately 80 jobs this spring
• A new Winners store opened at the Heritage Grove Shopping Centre in Owen Sound creating approximately 70 jobs. Additional stores set to open at the centre include Value Village, Michael's, the Dollar Tree and Future Shop.
• FedDev Ontario will invest up to $2.5M in Arnprio-based Pillar5 Pharma Inc. to help the company expand its manufacturing operations. The expansion is expected to create 50 jobs.
• New Tim Horton's in Sioux Lookout opens creating 40 full and part-time jobs
• A new museum that features the HMCS Ojibwa submarine will bring 45 jobs in Port Burwell, near London
• Firstline Canada, a software development company, is opening in London and plans to hire 40 workers within two to three years
• Hudson's Bay Company will open an outlet store at the Premium Outlet mall in Halton Hills this summer
• Construction started on the $57M multi-use recreational facility in the town of Lakeshore, near Windsor
• Construction started on the new Town of Lincoln Community Complex. The $17.5M facility will include an arena, library and community rooms.
• Fusebill, an Ottawa-based automated billing firm, raised $2M in investments to increase the sales and marketing aspects of its business. The company plans to expand its workforce by the end of the year.
• Kenalex Development Inc. will start installing water and sewer services for the construction of a 71-lot subdivision in North Bay
• Hiring started at Laurentian University's new School of Architecture in Sudbury
• Boomerang Kids, a consignment retailer that sells children's clothing and toys, will open three new Ottawa locations as well as a new Toronto location
• The new Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce located at the Seasons Retirement Home in Owen Sound will open in May and hire an executive director, nurses and personal service workers
• Construction started on a $3.1M roundabout project in Cambridge, which is expected to take three months to complete
• The Scarborough Hospital eliminated 98 positions as part of a cost-savings plan. The Hospital expects to cut additional positions to help meet budget targets.
• Cana-Vac has moved its assembly operations from Owen Sound to Stratford, affecting 42 employees in total. It is recruiting accounting, engineering, customer service, purchasing, manufacturing and inventory staff for its Stratford location.
• ElringKlinger Canada Inc. in Leamington is laying off 26 unionized workers on May 27
• More than 20 registered practical nurses receive layoff notices at the North Bay Regional Health Centre
• Cameco Fuel Manufacturing to lay off 17 staff at its Port Hope facility
• Province invests more than $666,000 in the mining supply and services sector
• Eleven Points Logistics, the company responsible for operating the new Target distribution centre in Cornwall, will hold a job fair on April 26 to fill hundreds of positions with expected start dates of June 1st, 2013
• The Kingston Economic Development Corporation launched a new website to help Kingston-based companies post job opportunities. The website address is www.kingstonishiring.com.
