Week of Jun 03 – Jun 07, 2013

• The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) approved a development plan for the South White Rose extension. This allows the proponents to move ahead with their plans.
• An application for UNESCO heritage status has been submitted for the Basque whaling station in Red Bay, Labrador. If approved, it will become the third site in the province with this designation and the first for Labrador.
• Avalon Employment of St. John's recently reached twenty years of operation. The company is funded by the provincial government and helps people with developmental disabilities find work.
• Kraken Sonar Systems of St. John’s has signed an agreement with the U.S. Navy’s Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
• The Iron Ore Company of Canada has laid off some of its executives in an effort to reduce costs. However, it is still growing its mining activities in Labrador.
• The provincial government announced funding of $862,500 to over 100 community groups and not-for-profit organizations for a variety of health initiatives
• Wee College, a pre-school in Labrador City has been forced to cease operations. It attributes the closure to a high cost of living in the area and a lack of staff.
• Almost one-half of all major projects in Atlantic Canada are based in Newfoundland and Labrador, according to the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council
• The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has ordered that up to half a million fish at a salmon farm in Hermitage Bay are to be killed due to a case of infectious salmon anemia (ISA).

Week of May 27 – May 31, 2013

• Eastern Health's food service workers held a demonstration regarding the outsourcing of the Tim Horton's outlets at regional hospitals in NL. About 70 people will lose their jobs.
• The provincial government announced $2.3M for the purchase of new equipment and infrastructure repairs and renovations for health care centers on the Northern Peninsula
• Approximately 1,600 homes and businesses in Bishop Fall's, Central NL will soon receive fibre-op connectivity
• The provincial government has announced $2.2M for health care equipment and renovations to the Happy Valley-Goose Bay, North West River and Churchill Falls facilities in Labrador
• The provincial government has awarded a contract of $225,000 to Island Roofing Co. Ltd. of Cox’s Cove for roofing upgrades to St. Mary’s All-Grade school in Mary’s Harbour and St. Lewis Academy in the Labrador Straits area
• The federal government and the government of NL announced the official opening of six new affordable housing units for seniors in Burin, NL
• The federal government and the government of NL announced the official opening of eight new affordable housing units for seniors and persons with disabilities in Salt Pond on the Burin Peninsula, NL
• The provincial government announced $480,000 in funding through the Technology Utilization Program to support innovation and technology to 10 local businesses in NL
• The Lobster Pool, a popular seafood business and roadside attraction just outside of Lewisporte, was destroyed by fire. The company plans to rebuild the business.
• Thirty-three dentists with Eastern Health have given their employer a 90-day notice indicating they will no longer be available to work after hours. The only two dental surgeons in NL recently resigned.

Week of May 20 – May 24, 2013

• The city of St. John's has approved $1.5M to develop a park near Kelsey Drive and Kenmount Terrace. The city has also invested $700,000 to extend services on Messenger Drive.
• Parts of Bannerman Park in St. John's will be closed this summer as construction on a new revitalization project gets underway. Once the park is completed, it will have a new refrigerated skating trail, a pavilion, splash pad and an upgraded playground.
• Nalcor has launched a new website (www.muskratfalls.nalcorenergy.com) that provides detailed information on employment and business opportunities, construction work and updates on the Muskrat Falls project in Labrador.
• The provincial government has issued a tender for repairs caused by high water levels to the Trans Canada Highway and Exit 12 to Pasadena on the west coast. Work is expected be completed by June 21.
• The Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador has awarded $1.8M to 12 businesses in NL in support of Innovation and Economic Diversification Projects
• The Froude Avenue Community Centre in St. John's officially reopened on May 22 after receiving $500,000 in interior and exterior upgrades. This work will allow the centre to enhance the programs and services offered within the community.
• The St. John's Port Authority will be introducing new security charges on August 1 to cover the cost of personnel providing 24-7 surveillance for offshore supply vessels
• Workers from Daley Brothers plant in La Scie blocked truckers from shipping crab to other plants on the Avalon Peninsula for processing. The plant was shut down and about 70-100 workers are affected.
• The Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony is expecting a shortage of surgeons soon. Two of the surgeons are leaving the area and a third is retiring. Recruitment efforts are in place by Labrador-Grenfell Health to replace the surgeons.
• Murph's Internet Cafe on High Street in Grand Falls-Windsor has closed
• Century Iron Mines of Toronto are in a financial position to move ahead with plans to develop an iron ore mine in Labrador-Quebec. Production is expected to begin in 2015.
• A new sports retail outlet, Golf Town has opened at the White Rose Drive location in St. John's
• The provincial government has announced an additional $2.5M for the final phase of the remediation project that impacted the soil by tailings at the former mine site in Buchans. The total government investment to date is $14M.
• The provincial government awarded a contract valued at $265,000 to the Carpet Man Ltd. of Happy Valley-Goose Bay for flooring repairs to the Peacock Primary school in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Week of May 13 – May 17, 2013

• The provincial government has loaned $475,000 to Burton’s Cove Logging and Lumber Limited of Burton's Cove for working capital. The loan is to help secure inventory and assist the company in obtaining sawlogs from Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.
• Construction on the Hebron oil project's gravity-based structure officially started with the first cut of steel in Marystown. The two-year project will employ 350 people in the local area.
• All Care Home Support of New Harbour has issued layoff notices to its unionized workers as of June 30. The company is unable to pay workers the 50 cent increase required by the collective agreement on July 1.
• The Eastern School District has voted to overturn the decision to close Whitbourne Elementary School and Epiphany Elementary in Heart's Desire-Islington. The district will hold another round of community consultations before making a decision.
• The provincial governments from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI have invested in a new venture capital fund. The fund will invest in IT, clean technologies, and life sciences in the Atlantic Region.
• The Government of Canada announced funding through the Atlantic Innovation Fund for three Charlottetown-based businesses (Island Abbey Foods, Delivra, and BioVectra) to develop new products and technologies
• The Government of Canada and the provincial governement have invested in a new program to help tradespeople supplement their trade certification with business credentials. The program will be offered at five colleges throughout Atlantic Canada.
• Fishers return to the water after they had tied up their boats to protest low lobster prices on the wharf. A panel will be created in order to study the factors that affect lobster prices and marketing.
