Provincial / Territorial Labour Market News

Week of Jun 03 – Jun 07, 2013

• The provincial government will create about 14 peer support positions to work in mental health and addictions. About 30 people will be trained to share the mostly part-time jobs.
• Register.com, a company that offers web management services, plans to create up to 100 new jobs in Yarmouth and Halifax. Sixty of the jobs will be in Yarmouth, and some hiring will begin immediately.
• A virus that has affected strawberries in the Annapolis Valley will cause more than 100 seasonal job losses
• Two restaurants, Cheese Curds and Habaneros, have opened under one roof on Windmill Road in Dartmouth
• Perry Rand Transportation Group Limited will lay off as many as 70 school bus drivers in the province as a result of losing a contract
• Lucy’s Locker, a clothing store, has opened in Liverpool
• A career resource centre in Amherst will close in June, putting three people out of work
• Ressources Appalaches has begun recruiting on its web site for 60 positions, including process operators, underground miners, and millwrights to work at its proposed Dufferin gold mine on the Eastern Shore
• A $5.5M contract to provide maintenance and support for military aircraft has been awarded to Enfield-based IMP Aerospace & Defence
• Developer Crombie REIT will begin a major project to expand and redesign the Scotia Square complex in Halifax in the next few months
• Halifax-based Karma Gaming hopes to increase its workforce from nine to 20. The company develops video games for lottery corporations.
• Southwest Properties Ltd. hopes to begin work in the fall of 2013 on the demolition of the Bank of Canada building and construction of a 21-storey mixed use building at 1583 Hollis Street in Halifax

Week of May 27 – May 31, 2013

• Marsh, a global insurance consulting firm, will receive payroll assistance from the provincial government if it creates 60 new jobs in Halifax over the next five years
• Federal government contracts have been awarded to Zutphen Contractors of Mabou to build a new wharf in Cheticamp and stabilize a retaining structure on the Cabot Trail
• Renovations are underway at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport on a $44.5M project to improve the check-in facilities
• Perry Lake Developments has begun work on Stewiacke River Crossing in Stewiacke. After completion of the residential first phase in July, further residential and commercial development will be added.
• A number of community and recreation centres in Cape Breton will undergo renovations as a result of federal funding
• Take It Outside, a retail store which specializes in exercise and casual wear, will open an outlet in Dartmouth Crossing in July and hire about seven or eight people
• Silverback Games, a Halifax-based video game company, may hire a group of workers over the next few months
• Impact, a Halifax-based advertising, marketing, and design firm, has expanded from six to 17 employees over the last year
• Delmar Construction will begin work in the next few months on a major expansion of the Nakile Home for Special Care in Yarmouth County. The work will take 18 months to complete, and will result in seven new positions.
• The Farm Services retail store in Scotsburn, scheduled to close in June, will reopen in July under new ownership

Week of May 20 – May 24, 2013

• Mid Valley Construction will begin work in May on the new Islands Health centre in Freeport on Digby Neck. The centre is expected to be completed in the fall.
• Seven Lakes Developments Ltd. will begin work in July on a subdivision in Porters Lake. About 634 homes could be built over a 10 year period.
• Tag, a home and fashion store located near Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth, will close as part of a national bankruptcy shutdown
• Admiral Insurance will hire 200 more workers in the summer of 2013 to work in its call centre in Halifax. HGS, a call centre in Dartmouth, will hire 100 more workers.
• Pure Energy Solutions Canada Inc. has closed its rechargeable battery plant in Amherst. About 20 workers will lose their jobs.
• The Nova Scotia Community College and its faculty have agreed on a new three-year contract which will include raises

Week of May 13 – May 17, 2013

• Seagate Construction is renovating a 5,000-square-foot commercial building at 3358 Novlea Drive in Halifax, which will become a new liquor store
• Several stores have closed since the beginning of the year in the Sunnyside Mall in Bedford, but some new leases are expected for others
• General maintenance will take place at Shelburne Ship Repair on the passenger ferry MS Grand Manan over the next four weeks, employing 25 people
• Major renovations and additions will be carried out by Delmar Construction of Yarmouth on the Clarks Harbour Elementary School over the next couple of years
• Muwin Estate Wines Ltd. of New Ross, which has seven employees, will expand its facilities to lower its production costs and better serve its growing list of clients
• Ribbons Recycled, a Dartmouth company that recycles toner and ink cartridges, has gone out of business, leaving 14 people out of work
• Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, an Ontario-based pest control company which specializes in animals that may get into homes, has opened its first Nova Scotia location in Halifax
