In the Kitchener-Waterloo-Barrie area the outlook for janitors, caretakers and building superintendents is expected to be fair for the period 2012-2013. This is one of the larger occupations in the region with a labour force of more than 8,500 at the time of the 2006 census.
In Ontario, the outlook for janitors, caretakers and building superintendents is expected to be fair for the period 2012-2013. According to the 2006 census, this is one of the larger occupations in Ontario with more than 86,000 janitors, caretakers and building superintendents in the labour force. It has been a slow growing, stable occupation over the last several years. Some jobs will be created as new facilities, multiple housing and commercial establishments are built. However, turnover within this large occupation should provide most of the opportunities as workers leave for more highly paid or less strenuous, physical work. Retirements will also generate some openings, given the older age profile of this occupation compared to all occupations in Ontario. At the same time, some of these workers, especially building superintendents, tend to work longer or take on this work post retirement. Recent trends towards environmental sustainability have created the need for environmentally friendly cleaning techniques and products. Despite this change, the occupation will remain fairly labour intensive.
