The outlook for secondary school teachers in the province of Ontario is expected to be limited for 2012-2013. At the time of the 2006 census, there were almost 65,000 secondary school teachers in Ontario. The trend of declining student enrolment is expected to persist and will continue to reduce the demand for new full time teachers. There is a large surplus of recent graduates - thousands more are entering the profession than are leaving every year. This is causing increased competition for long term occasional and supply teaching positions that become available as existing teachers retire or resign. Those teachers capable of teaching technological subjects and music may find it easier to secure full time employment in this field.
