In the Windsor-Sarnia area the outlook for retail trade managers is expected to be fair for the period 2012-2013. According to the 2006 census, this is the seventh largest occupation in this region with 6,300 retail trade managers employed in the labour force.
In Ontario, the outlook for retail trade managers is expected to be fair for the period 2012-2013. Employment growth in this sector is influenced by population growth, consumer spending and the state of the economy. The recent fluctuations in the price of gasoline and food may limit consumer spending on discretionary items. Retail trade managers are concentrated in large urban areas. Over the past several years, the retail market in Canada has shifted steadily towards chain stores. This change has caused the share of employment to decline for smaller retailers. Retail trade managers have increased their reliance on technology such as e-commerce, supply chain management techniques (SAP) and electronic scanning in recent years. Retail trade managers who have diverse industry knowledge and have experience in budgeting, staffing and sales, will be better able to cope with the changing retail environment.
According to the 2006 census, there are approximately 132,000 retail trade managers, making it the second largest occupational group in Ontario. In this occupation, the average age of workers was 43 compared to 40 years for all occupations in Ontario. Given the size of this occupation grouping, the need to replace workers who retire or leave their positions will be a source of job openings in the upcoming years.
