Week of May 06 – May 10, 2013

• A new mini aquarium with 30 fish tanks will open in Petty Harbour on June 15 as a tourist attraction. The aquarium will be located at the Petty Harbour Fishermen's Co-op.
• The provincial government has invested $227,000 through the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation for interior upgrades to social housing units in Stephenville, Corner Brook and Port-aux-Basques
• Some forestry companies in NL have expressed concerns over a shortage of loggers since the paper mills in Stephenville and Grand Falls-Windsor have closed. Workers have gone to Labrador to work on the Muskrat Falls project.
• According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Commission, the demand for single-detached housing units has remained strong in the St. John's metro area
• Husky Energy has reached a landmark of 200M barrels of oil from the White Rose field. Drilling has also started on the first gas injection well at the South White Rose and expects to be in full production by 2014.
• The provincial government's Dept. of Health and Community Services has announced that seven new Medical Flight team members are in training. The team will be stationed in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and expects to be operational by mid-summer.
• The provincial government's Dept. of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has announced $15,000 for upgrades to the Sir Robert Bond Park and area walking trails in Whitbourne
• The provincial government's Dept. of Transportation and Works announced a tender for mechanical and electrical system upgrades to the Confederation Building, East Block. The tender closes on 5 June. Work is expected to start in July.
• The provincial government's Dept. of Fisheries and Aquaculture has awarded $100,000 to Hailey Bear Enterprises of Twillingate and the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation at Marine Institute to test new Twin Trawl Technology
• The provincial government's Dept. of Transportation and Works has awarded a $132,000 contract to St. George’s Excavation Ltd., Whitestone Developments Ltd. and Paddy’s Plumbing and Heating to renovate six social housing units on the west coast
• The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers representing almost 40 machinists, millwrights and welders and Kruger have reached a deal with the Corner Brook pulp and paper mill.
• A provincial government contract of $220,000 has been awarded to Gallant’s Roofing of Benoit’s Cove for roofing upgrades to William Mercer Academy in Dover
• The provincial government's Dept. of Innovation, Business and Rural Development has announced $422,000 for the Youth Innovation Program that will provide support to projects and technology in 24 schools throughout NL

Week of Apr 29 – May 03, 2013

• The Fishers’ Loft Inn in Port Rexton on the Bonavista Peninsula will reopen early May with a new conference centre that can accommodate up to 70 people, and up to 200 people for weddings and reunions
• The provincial government has awarded a contract of $246,000 to National Roof Services Inc. to replace the roof at Botwood Collegiate
• The provincial government's Dept. of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has announced a $15,000 grant for upgrades to the Peter Barry Duff Memorial Park in Paradise
• The provincial government's Dept. of Health and Community Services has announced $3.6M in core funding over the next five years for a new master’s program for nurse practitioners in the province
• The provincial government's Dept. of Fisheries and Aquaculture has issued a call for proposals to evaluate new opportunities for harvesting, processing and marketing yellowtail flounder
• The Convergys call centre on Torbay Road in St. John's closed on June 30. Seventy-five of the hundred employees at the centre have the option to work from home and 25 can be placed in other positions within the company.
• The provincial government's Dept. of Municipal Affairs has awarded a $22M contract to EllisDon to develop a new double ice surface arena in Paradise. The arena is expected to be completed by September 2014.
• Eastern Health has started renovations to the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre. Work to the central registration area is expected to be completed within two weeks.

Week of Apr 22 – Apr 26, 2013

• A tender worth $16.7M was awarded to Pomerleau Inc. towards the construction of a new St. Teresa's school in St. John's. The school is expected to be ready for classes by September, 2014.
• An agreement was reached in Newfoundland and Labrador between the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union and the Association of Seafood Producers over the price of crab.
• The provincial government Dept. of Tourism, Culture and Recreation announced a grant of $15,000 to the West Rock Community Centre in Corner Brook for a new rock climbing wall.
• Construction has started in Corner Brook to redevelop the former Regina High School as an intermediate school, scheduled to open in September, 2014. Marco Services Ltd. was awarded a contract worth nearly $12M to undertake this work.

Week of Apr 15 – Apr 19, 2013

• The only gas station on Bell Island has closed due to a dispute with the town over water tax
• The provincial government Dept. of Innovation, Business and Rural Development is providing an equity investment of $2M to Icewater Harvesting Inc. towards the financing of a new fishing vessel
• The City of St. John's has awarded a contract to Magna Contracting and Management Inc. to construct a community centre in the Southlands area of St. John's. The contract is worth nearly $3M.
• The Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association will close at the end of April due to budget cuts. Nine employees will be affected.
• The provincial government Dept. of Natural Resources has announced plans for a $90M loan to the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Mill to assist with industry challenges
• The provincial government Dept. of Child, Youth and Family Services announced $14.3M for the final phase to implement the Continuum of Care Strategy for children and youth
• The City of Mount Pearl will begin a pilot composting project to a specific area of the city in May to divert waste from the landfill. If the project is successful, it will be expanded throughout the city in 2014.
• Renovations estimated at $740,000 have been completed at the Health Care Centre in Conne River. All public health and community care programs are now offered through the Conne River Health Centre.
• About 200 fishermen are protesting outside the Golden Shell Fisheries plant in Hickman's Harbour, Trinity Bay. The protestors want the plant to stop buying and processing crab until the price dispute is settled.
