Currently the chances of qualified Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians finding employment are considered to be fair in the local area. Although a small occupation locally, employment opportunities may be found with provincial or municipal public works departments and with local construction and consulting companies. There have been job vacancies noted for this occupation in our area over the past several years. The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal offers a sponsorship program for first-year Civil Engineering Technology students. They offer paid tuition, a monthly living allowance and paid work terms in exchange for, at least, six months of service following successful completion of training. The Nova Scotia Community College began offering a 2 year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology at its Dartmouth Waterfront Campus in September 2008. Graduates of this program may be eligible for membership in TechNova, the certifying body for Engineering & Applied Science Technicians and Technologists for Nova Scotia.
In addition to employment opportunities locally, opportunities may exist in other areas of the province or in other regions of the country. People who are able to work elsewhere may want to research opportunities for this occupation in other labour markets within Nova Scotia and across the country. The future employment outlook for Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians in Nova Scotia is expected to be fair over the next 5 years.
