Computer and information systems managers perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of information systems and electronic data processing (EDP) departments and companies
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for electronic data processing and computer systems operations and development
  • Meet with clients to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines
  • Assemble and manage teams of information systems personnel to design, develop, implement, operate and administer computer and telecommunications software, networks and information systems
  • Control the budget and expenditures of the department, company or project

An increase in the use of the internet in doing business has resulted in demand for managers to ensure information systems are secure and efficient. This occupation tends to be found in larger organizations, such as government departments, hospitals and educational institutions. The contact centre industry, which has grown significantly in recent years (through both expansion and new business), has created openings for entry level positions which also generate increased demand for management/supervisory level positions. A new contact centre focussed on market research - Acrobat Research (Greenwood) - opened at the end of 2007 and now employs approximately 100 people. More recently, IMP Customer Care opened up a new contact centre in Windsor in 2009 and is expected to reach employment levels of approximately 100 jobs by 2014.

Opportunities are better for qualified experienced managers. Computer and information system managers are constantly keeping pace with changes in technology. At the high end of responsibility, the information System Manager in supervisory roles will have the maintenance, configuration and recommendation for upgrading and operating of a network. Where wireless technologies are utilized, the position will require knowledge either from a programming or a networking perspective, and potentially knowledge of both. In addition to technical skills, those managers with good communication skills and an understanding of management practices will have better chances in the labour market.
