Construction millwrights and industrial mechanics install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. Construction millwrights are employed by millwrighting contractors. Industrial mechanics are employed in manufacturing plants, utilities and other industrial establishments.

Construction millwrights and industrial mechanics perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Read blueprints, diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures
  • Install, align, dismantle and move stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment, such as pumps, fans, tanks, conveyors, furnaces and generators according to layout plans using hand and power tools
  • Operate hoisting and lifting devices such as cranes, jacks and tractors to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up and repair of machinery
  • Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions
  • Install, troubleshoot and maintain power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and programmable logic controls
  • Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts
  • Operate machine tools such as lathes and grinders to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance or set-up of machinery
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on machinery
  • Construct foundations for machinery or direct other workers to construct foundations
  • Assemble machinery and equipment prior to installation using hand and power tools and welding equipment.

Education & Job Requirements for Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics (Except Textile) in Athabasca--Grande Prairie--Peace River Region

Education and job requirements can vary by region. Workers in regulated occupations require a licence to work legally. Workers in non-regulated occupations do not require a licence, but employers may have other certification requirements.

Local Employment Requirements

- To work as a millwright in Alberta, individuals may be a registered apprentice or a certified journeyman although it is not mandatory.
- An apprentice in their final period of a program may wish to write the Interprovincial Exam under the Interprovincial Standards Program. If successful, the apprentice will be granted a Red Seal, which is recognized throughout most of Canada. This program is managed by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA), which has members from all participating provinces/ territories and the federal government.
- Individuals with a certificate issued by another recognized apprenticeship program in Canada can apply for an Alberta Journeyman Equivalency document under the Equivalency Program with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
- Individuals that do not have a trades certificate but can demonstrate equivalent skills and experience, based on the standards set for journeymen, may apply for certification under the Qualifications Certificate Program through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Local Skills Requirements

- Experience is an important asset to finding employment in Alberta. Most employers look for individuals with one to two years experience.
- Millwrights should be familiar with various types of machinery such as hydraulic systems, pumps and compressors, and welding tools. They should also know how to read and interpret blueprints, drawings or specifications.
- Millwrights may need to estimate labour and material costs, work as a liaison with management, engineers and other trades as well as instruct apprentices and supervise other workers.
- Strong communication skills are essential including writing, reading and oral communication. Individuals must have strong problem solving and decision making skills and posses strong numerical skills. Millwrights often work within a team so people skills are essential.
