Week of May 06 – May 10, 2013

• The province’s biotech industry has taken over the Halifax-based medical research lab previously operated by the National Research Council to save it from closure. The lab employs 13 people.
• Golden Goal Soccer Supplies opened in May in Burnside Park in Dartmouth
• The ALT Hotel Halifax Stanfield will open near the airport in June 2013 and is looking to fill 30-35 positions
• Cape Breton, Truro, and especially New Glasgow are experiencing problems with economic growth, job loss, and/or population decreases since the recession, according to the Conference Board of Canada
• Conifer Fund Services, a San Francisco-based hedge fund company, will open an office within months in Halifax and could hire up to 120 workers over time. The company is attracted to the educated labour force in the area.
• Tri-Star Industries, the Yarmouth-based company which produces ambulance vehicles, is in the process of hiring some of the 16 new workers anticipated as part of its expansion
• Pictou Lodge is expected to reopen in late May 2013 under new ownership. The seasonal hotel, which had employed about 60 workers, had gone into receivership over the winter.
• Fairlanes Bowling will close its alley in the Halifax Shopping Centre at the end of June 2013. Twenty workers, including 3 fulltime employees, will be affected.
• Three Guysborough county community groups will receive infrastructure funding from the federal government
• HAF Skate, a Truro-based skateboard and skate shop, has opened a location in New Glasgow
• The Lobster Bar, a restaurant, will open in Pictou in June 2013
• Ressources Appalaches, a Quebec-based mining company, has secured funding and hopes to begin recruiting 50 to 60 people in the next month to restart operations at the Dufferin gold mine near Sheet Harbour
• Atlantic Gold hopes to begin production at the proposed gold mine in Moose River by the middle of 2015, although there are still hurdles to overcome

Week of Apr 29 – May 03, 2013

• The province of Nova Scotia will provide a loan to Pollycello, an Amherst-based packaging manufacturer, to help maintain the 300 jobs at the plant
• Flight-simulation developer Atlantis Systems Corp., which employs 73 people in Dartmouth, will work with Calian Technologies Ltd. as part of a two-year technician training project for the Defence Department beginning in 2013
• Pogue Fado, a pub located on Barrington Street in Halifax, has closed, putting 80 people out of work
• The mink farming industry in Nova Scotia is turning record profits. Most of the province's 120 mink farms and 1,000 workers are in Digby County.
• Taz Records will open its second location in the Halifax metro area in June 2013 with a store on the Bedford Highway
• The Avalon Sexual Assault Centre in Halifax will get a boost in emergency funding from government which could result in additional hires
• Moir’s Costumes & Events will open on Provost Street in New Glasgow this month
• Giant Tiger will open its New Glasgow store in the fall of 2013 at the former Zellers location
• Scotsburn Co-operative Services will close the Farm Services retail store in Scotsburn in June 2013

Week of Apr 22 – Apr 26, 2013

• The federal government will contribute $1.3M to the Fortress of Louisbourg in 2013 to develop new visitor activities and promote the 300th anniversary of its founding
• Ocean Optometry and Moksha Yoga have recently opened locations in the area, while the Cellar Bar & Grill and the Gracious Indian takeout will close
• Armco Capital Inc. expects to begin work on a subdivision near McCabe Lake in Middle Sackville in May 2013
• The OldTriangle Irish Alehouse, based in Halifax, plans to open a location in Sydney and train up to 50 workers
• Construction is expected to begin in the spring or early summer of 2013 on a new recreational and competitive rowing centre on Lochaber Lake
• Marinus Verhagen Enterprises Ltd. will begin building an asbestos disposal facility in McLellans Brook this spring and open it later in 2013
• Composite Atlantic Ltd. of Lunenburg has landed a contract to produce a composite wheel bin for airline fuselages. Some job growth at the company is expected.
• Thermo Dynamics, a Dartmouth-based manufacturer of solar heating hardware, expects to hire around 10 new employees over the next two years. The company will install systems in homes as part of a pilot project run by city council.
• The federal government will contribute to infrastructure projects in Cape Breton, including work on community centres, fire halls, and trails
• According to Export Development Canada, improvements in the United States economy will lead to increased exports of forest products, fish and tires from Nova Scotia
• A new biomass fuel plant in Point Tupper expected to eventually create more than 200 direct and indirect jobs will start producing electricity in May 2013

Week of Apr 15 – Apr 19, 2013

• Bird Construction continues work on the Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn hotel project in Halifax. The two hotels will employ about 120 people when completed in April 2014.
• Weymouth-based Lewis Mouldings and Wood Specialities, maker of various wood products, has received a loan from the provincial government to expand products and markets. The company employs 75 people and plans to add more with additional growth.
• Kings Produce Processing Ltd. has won a contract to make boxed lunches for soldiers at CFB Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B. The company employs 75 people in Middleton and has tripled its workforce in the past four years.
• Construction has begun on a new space for North End Building Supplies of Port Hood. The bigger space is expected to be ready in early 2014, and the business expects to add to its staff of 16.
• Renovations continue on two schools in the Guysborough County area
• Always Home Homecare, a care for seniors business based in Dartmouth, will open a satellite office in Liverpool in May 2013 and employ several homecare workers. Other satellite offices may follow in other parts of the province.
• The Stubborn Goat Gastropub will open in July on Grafton Street in Halifax
• Teachers in Nova Scotia will see raises of more than seven per cent over three years after ratifying a new contract
