Currently the chances of qualified Family, Marriage and Other Related Counsellors finding employment are considered to be fair in the local area. Most family, marriage and other related counsellors are employed in the health and social service systems. Programs in these sectors are heavily dependent on public funding. Anyone interested in working in counselling would benefit most from a university degree in a related field, preferably a Masters. This creates far more options, especially for the higher end jobs. Other counsellors usually require a specialized knowledge or experience such as youth counsellor, drug, alcohol or gambling addiction counsellors. Unlike Psychologists, Counsellors in a private practice are not reimbursed through supplemental health insurance, which limits opportunities for private practitioners.

In addition to employment opportunities locally, opportunities may exist in other areas of the province or in other regions of the country. People who are able to work elsewhere may want to research opportunities for this occupation in other labour markets within Nova Scotia and across the country. The future employment outlook for Family, Marriage and Other Related Counsellors in Nova Scotia is expected to be good over the next 5 years.
