Manufacturing managers perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of a manufacturing establishment or the operations or production department of a manufacturing establishment
  • Develop and implement plans to efficiently use materials, labour and equipment to meet production targets
  • Plan and manage the establishment of departmental budget
  • Develop production schedules and maintain an inventory of raw materials and finished products
  • Plan and implement changes to machinery and equipment, production systems and methods of work
  • Direct quality control inspection system and develop production reporting procedures
  • Develop equipment maintenance schedules and recommend the replacement of machines
  • Hire, supervise and train or oversee training of employees in the use of new equipment or production techniques.

Although manufacturing has been feeling the effects of a slow economy and is sensitive to the value of the Canadian dollar in comparison to the United States, there have been some major contracts signed or that began in the past year. Employment more than doubled at the Irving Shipyard in Halifax during 2010 thanks to Coast Guard, Navy, and supply vessel contracts. Some other manufacturing companies that have signed major contracts in the past year include Rosborough Boats, Ultra-Electronics Maritime Systems, IMP Aerospace, Cherubini Group, Marener Industries Inc, and Nautel. As of January 2010, companies who invest in new technology and equipment will be eligible to receive a 10 percent manufacturing and processing investment credit.

Manufacturing management positions often require business or engineering related university backgrounds, along with years of industry experience. Many in these occupations are promoted from within after gaining extensive experience with the company's production process.
