Carpenters construct, erect, install, maintain and repair structures and components of structures made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials. They are employed by construction companies, carpentry contractors, and maintenance departments of factories, plants and other establishments, or they may be self-employed.

Carpenters perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
  • Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
  • Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
  • Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, moulding and hardware
  • Maintain, repair and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants and other establishments
  • Supervise apprentices and other construction workers
  • May prepare cost estimates for clients.

For the 2012-2014 period, job opportunities in the Laurentides region are expected to be fair for this occupation.

According to 2006 Census data, the construction industry employs the majority (90%) of carpenters in the Laurentides region. Employment growth in this occupation is therefore closely tied to activity in construction and residential renovation, sectors that have been experiencing significant growth in recent years. Although the construction industry will be unable to sustain the breakneck pace of past years, the increase in the number of carpenters should be comparable to the average increase for all occupations.

Employment opportunities will therefore result in part from sectoral growth. Other openings will come from the need to replace workers who retire, leave the occupation, get promoted to positions as carpentry contractors and forepersons or, if they have the required skills, as construction managers. These job openings will be available to experienced carpenters who are unemployed or working in other occupations, graduates with vocational diplomas in carpentry and, frequently, individuals who meet the conditions for obtaining an apprentice certificate without having a diploma. The CCQ will issue apprentice certificates to workers who do not have a vocational diploma in the event of a regional shortage. In the Laurentides region, a number of carpenters are unemployed. According to 2006 Census data, about 20% of carpenters are self employed and almost all are men.
