Authors and writers plan, research and write books, scripts, storyboards, plays, essays, speeches, manuals, specifications and other non-journalistic articles for publication or presentation. They are employed by advertising agencies, governments, large corporations, private consulting firms, publishing firms, multimedia/new-media companies and other establishments, or they may be self-employed.

The following is a summary of the main duties of some occupations in this unit group:
  • Novelists, playwrights, script writers, poets and other creative writers conceive and write novels, plays, scripts, poetry and other material for publication or presentation and may conduct research to establish factual content and to obtain other necessary information.
  • Technical writers analyze material, such as specifications, notes and drawings, and write manuals, user guides and other documents to explain clearly and concisely the installation, operation and maintenance of software and electronic, mechanical and other equipment.
  • Copywriters study and determine selling features of products and services and write text for advertisements and commercials.

Authors and writers may specialize in a particular subject or type of writing.

Education and job requirements can vary by region. Workers in regulated occupations require a licence to work legally. Workers in non-regulated occupations do not require a licence, but employers may have other certification requirements.

Copywriters and technical writers are usually accredited by their connection to a writer's association. Employers may go to the associations and view profiles as well as request writer portfolios in order to help in the hiring process. They may also need an in-depth knowledge and/or university degree/college diploma demonstrating their understanding of the subject about which they are writing.

Creative writers are usually required to be part of an association/union as well as take some classes to continuously work on their writing skills. Some classes are offered by universities and colleges and some are also offered in workshops by writers.

The most important essential skills noted were; Oral communication, working with others, reading text, document use, finding information, critical thinking, job task planning and organizing. Continuous learning was also
considered important in a writer's development and improvement.

Additional skills:
According to some associations, certain additional skills may also apply especially for freelance writers; such as the capacity to budget, manage finances, and give quotes to clients . Knowledge of copywriting issues and laws as well as a capacity to network in order to expand clientele and meet other information sources is also important. Creativity has also been noted as an important asset to working as a writer.
