Local Training

Specialist physicians require a university degree in medicine from an approved medical school and additional postgraduate residency training ranging from three or more years depending upon the specialty.

A science baccalaureate may be taken at any New Brunswick universities, followed by out of province medical training.

Since September 2010, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB) offers an innovative program that provides New Brunswick students with the opportunity to attend medical school in their home province. It is an expansion of Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine.

DMNB is a partnership with the Government of New Brunswick, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine. The program will admit 30 students from New Brunswick each year and in their first two years students will attend classes in Saint John and for their final two years they will fan out across the province to complete their clerkships in Moncton, Woodstock, Fredericton and Miramichi, as well as in Saint John.

New Brunswick also has the first French-language medical school outside of Quebec, in Moncton. The program is a joint project between the Université de Sherbrooke and the Université de Moncton, with the Quebec school issuing the degrees and hospitals in Moncton providing much of the training.

Hospitals in the province do offer residency training opportunities.
