Currently the chances of qualified Mechanical Engineers finding employment are considered to be fair in the local area.
Most mechanical engineers work in the professional business services, utilities and manufacturing industries. Governments seem interested in investing in manufacturing industries that want to improve their production capacity and support "green" (environmental) initiatives. Even though there are not many employment opportunities, the labour market has a need for trained engineers with work experience. In New Brunswick, engineers rely heavily on major projects to provide employment, particularly in the manufacturing and construction industries. For example, the refurbishment of the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant strengthened and maintained the workforce in the province. However, this project is drawing to an end, and there are very few major projects on the immediate horizon. Engineers Canada and the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT) partnered with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) to conduct a two-year labour market study of the engineering and technology sector. Employment opportunities for Mechanical Engineers may vary in different communities across the province. You may want to check for specific opportunities in your community. Also, people who are able to work elsewhere may want to research the opportunities for this occupation in other areas of NB or in other provinces across the country.
