For the 2012-2014 period, job opportunities in the Capitale-Nationale region are expected to be fair for this occupation. Job openings will result mainly from numerous replacement needs due to employees retiring and, to a lesser degree, from a slight increase in the employment rate.
According to the 2006 Census data, the majority of plumbers work in the construction industry, particularly for speciality trade contractors, general building contractors or companies specializing in civil engineering or utility system construction.
In the last few years, the construction industry has been bolstered by new housing starts, a substantial increase in spending on home improvements and more recently by increased spending on commercial and institutional construction spending. Between 2012 and 2014, the construction industry is expected to remain strong in the Capitale-Nationale region; however, since the level of activity is already very high, employment growth will be weaker than in recent years.
The employment outlook for plumbers is good. Despite a sizeable increase in the number of plumbing training program graduates in recent years, the placement rate has never dropped below 77%. According to the Relance survey of the Quebec Department of Education, Recreation and Sport, the number of graduates of plumbing training programs rose by over 52% between 2004 and 2011, from 374 to 570. These statistics indicate that, despite an increase in the number of registrants in this training program, the thriving Quebec construction industry creates a satisfactory balance between the supply and demand for plumbers in the labour market.
